Paleo Hoisin Sauce

Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp coconut aminos
  • 1 tbsp molasses blackstrap
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp organic orange juice
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp mirin
  • 1 tsp Red Boat fish sauce
  • 1 tsp coconut sugar
  • 1/2 tsp anchovy paste
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese five spice powder
  • 1 tbsp miso paste (exclude for strict Paleo)
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground mustard
  • 2 drops liquid smoke hickory

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a heavy-bottom saucepan over medium-low heat. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, and gently simmer until dark and thickened, about 30 minutes.

  2. Test the thickness of the sauce by dipping a wooden spoon and raising it slowly. The sauce should drip smoothly from the spoon. If the sauce has reached the desired thickness, then remove pan from heat and let cool to room temperature. The sauce can be stored in a sealed jar for up to 2 weeks.
